Though they had sailed twice round the world in their 30 foot yacht, Eric and Susan Hiscock had never visited the United States. After calling at ports in Western France, Spain and Portugal, they revisited the Windward Islands and the Bahamas, and thence sailed direct to Bar Harbour, Maine. They cruised down the New England coast, via Long Island Sound and New York to the Chesapeake, and at Norfolk, Virginia, entered the inland section of the Intracoastal Waterway.
